This year has been my first year studying media. When I began this course there were a lot of things that I had to learn and there where even some things I found difficult. When I was given my preliminary task it seemed fairly easy. Until I had to learn about the different camera shots, 180 degree rule, holding the camera steady and even editing. The preliminary task gave me and my group the tools to transfer on to the main task. The preliminary took us at least 3 attempts before we got it right. I also learnt that organization was very important because we just threw our preliminary task together, so it wasn’t planned very well when we filmed it. This meant resulted in some shots that weren’t precise and did not fit in with the scene. I also learnt about using the camera, zoom, night vision.
The task helped me learn about camera functions. I also learnt about creating storyboards, which helped me with creating the animation storyboard. I used adobe premier 3 which I used to edit the preliminary I learnt to cut shots out, stretch them to last for longer and. I also learnt how to add effects such as blur, transitions and etc.
The preliminary task also encouraged me to be more confident with the main task because at first I was very nervous and felt really lost.
Furthermore when I began the preliminary task I learnt about different camera shots. I have created a power point presentation of all the different shots I learnt whilst completing my prelim task. Some of these shots I later used in my open sequence.
The sound quality at times is not good and you can barely hear the actress and what she is saying.
The shots are not that complicated nor are they even interesting.
The editing is very basic and doesn’t really go with the sequence.
The framing is not to good either.
On my Thriller open title sequence I learnt from these previous mistakes by, choosing interesting and complicated shots such as the shot of Samantha Evans walking down the stairs. Close up of Grimaldi and Samantha Evans face/ better shot reverse shot which flows is smoother than the preliminary.
The framing is much better, the editing is much more complex and a lot of time was spent on trying to perfect it. The editing also shows a diverse range of skills which I think add to the smooth and fluid feel to the sequence. In the prelim the shots were jumpy and I had to cut out a lot. Due to the fact that Thriller sequence because it was shot better the editing was a bit easier. Also the choice of music was much better. The music really goes with the Thriller open sequence and we used at least 2 different types of music and 1 SFX which was a heartbeat, however on the prelim I used one piece of music which was not well thought out and picked not because it fitted in with the shot. From the prelim I have also learnt about group work and how to take everybody’s ideas in to account and then create a vision which appeals to us the individuals and the audience in mind. This
meant at times there were things that I wanted to do in the Thriller sequence but because I had the audience in mind and thought about what would best appeal to them I changed it with the help of my group because on the prelim I used ideas that were maybe inside jokes and things that only a few people would understand but in the Thriller sequence I have thought about what my intended target age group of 15 upwards would want to see, find interesting and challenge them. Had I not filmed my prelim I would not be aware of any of that. So all in all even though I feel that my prelim task was not that successful from a viewer’s point of view. I feel that it has given me along with my group the tools and maybe even wisdom that we needed to create are open title sequence. Moreover if you compare our prelim to our opening title sequence you will see that it is recorded better, edited better, has a better plot/narrative.
