Analysis of sin city

Frank Miller's Sin City is a 2005 American crime Thriller film written, produced and directed by Frank Miller. It is a neo-noir based on Miller's graphic novel series of the same name.

The film opens with an establishing shot which is titled downwards on the city. This first scene introduces the audience to the location of the City in which maybe the plot of the film will occur. We can see the entire city in black and white. The Camera shows us a birds eye view of the city/sky scrapers and we know can see the city building spell out the words ( Sin city). Which is very ironic as that one shot is supposed to make the audiemce think that the city is literally made from sin and or could be called sin city. The rest is black and white and when we see the words Sin City it is in red, a bold, passionate, violent, fertile and sexual colour. It looks as if viens are bleeding and they merge in to the word Sin City. This clever format could also be an indiction for how the colouring for the rest of the film may be, black and white and red for select objects of importance.

The rest of the title open sequence is animated like a comic book. The characters pictures come up in black and white whilst their names are in a bold 3d font. The title sequence also shows what may happen to each charcter in the plot . This technique reminds me of the opening of catch me if you can and pink panther as they both in the title sequence introduce you to charcters and show you how the plot may progress but not how it will end, it leaves you at a cliff hanger from the begining. These are all the charcters in sin city. The lighting is pretty dark and the costumes are the charcters own clothes from bright red gowns to casual clothing, suits and stripper outfits. The soundtrack/music sounds jazzy something you may hear in a cafe or seedy blues club. It sounds sexy, seductive yet dangerous. I think it sums up the city as it is all of the above. After one minute the jazzy music gets a bit more fast paced and you can hear drums this could be a indiction that it starts of slow and ends fast.
